We love Jack. Jack is our Junior Designer and he’s a mighty fine Junior Designer at that. Jack recently celebrated two years with WE CAN CREATIVE, so to help celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2015, we asked him what he’s learnt while working with us, and what advice he has for other young designers about to enter the workplace…
I was still at Bedford Colleges studying HND Graphic Design when I joined WE CAN CREATIVE. It was my first job in design and at that point I didn’t have any experience in dealing with real creative problems. Whilst college had prepared me, I was still intimidated by the thought of my work being anything else but my own. However, I dived in excited and ready for what was to come.
Since then, I have learnt and experienced so much. Not just through doing things right either. I have and continue to learn from mistakes. Working in such a dynamic agency, I have been lucky enough to have worked on a range of different jobs, which has given me a diverse experience of design. From small helpful jobs to managing entire projects, both for web and print, I have had the opportunity to build on my skills in a variety of areas. The projects I enjoy most are the ones that I can see making a difference to people’s day-to-day lives. Whether that be a small icon used for an already established website or a brand identity that helps a business refresh how it communicates with its target audiences.
Being part of a young, growing agency really has made me appreciate what happens behind the scenes to keep the agency moving forward. It’s interesting for me to see how the directors manage both the admin and creative side of the business. Having them as a constant source of help and knowledge has been of great benefit to me. They’re always striving to find the root of a problem, not just skimming the surface but really digging into a brief. Questioning, analysing and understanding.
I’ve also learnt a massive amount meeting other professionals in different fields of work. It has given me a wider scope of what and who impacts what we do, from writers to web developers, everyone comes together to create a friendly focused team who are always willing to offer a hand or advice. That’s what I value about WE CAN CREATIVE, they don’t just know how to get people talking about a brand, they also have time to talk to you.
If you’re about to take those first steps from classroom to studio, I would say you just have to jump in with both feet. I know it sounds corny but it’s true. Do as much as you can both in and out of the studio. Don’t be daunted by large projects, if you do more now, you will be more experienced and better off in the long run.
Another thing to remember is that everyone makes mistakes. If anyone is kind enough to give you an opportunity straight out of college, they will be expecting you to make mistakes too, remember, they were in your shoes once too.
Its been a fantastic couple of years both for me and it’s been great to be part or the success that WE CAN CREATIVE has become. I’m really grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and look forward to grabbing many more with both hands.
